Kurashiki Fireball

Return back to meteorite list

A bright fireball appeared over Okayama prefecture at 7, Mar. 2014 16h14m27s(UT).
This fireball was recorded by automatic TV cameras belonging SonotaCo network members who are Mr.M.Ueda(Osaka pref.),
Mr. SonotaCo(Tokyo pref), Mr.mars and Okayama Science University sky monitor camera(Okayama pref.).
Mr.M.Ueda calculated trajectory and orbit and Y.Shiba calculated meteorite fell prediction.
The trajectory elevation angle was high and the initial velocity was fast 21km/s however, the trajectory end height reached about 30km.
The no catastrophic fragmentation was estimated exist because this fireball luminous profile was smooth. Thus a single small meteorite will fell.
The predicted impact area is around Soja city, Okayama prefecture which extended the east to the west wide area.
The predicted meteorite mass is 30 grams or less.
Extended impact area result got reason is meteorite mass error influenced rapid jet stream push effect to the east.

The predicted impact area is shown in red oval
