My name is Harry Chi-king Mak. Originally from Hong Kong, I came to settle down in Manchester/UK in 1995 after teaching chemistry for 12 years.
Now after working in UK as travel consultant for 14 years, I choose to retire from normal work and work at home as self-employed (2009).
My self-employment work deals with selling second-hand microscopes and accessories and earn for a simple living..
I have a separate eBay account (haworthia_mak) dealing with my hobby and sharing propagated plants with fellow enthusiasts. Of course it is hoped that the selling of plants
helps to gather enough money to support my hobby and collection.
Horticulture (Succulents & Cacti) is my main hobby.
I specialized in the genus Haworthia and currently holder of National Plant Collection of Haworthia under the National Council for the Conservation of Plants & Gardens (UK).
My main interest is hybridizing haworthias, I started hybridization more than 15 years ago and currently have several hundred of new hybrids.
Microscopy and photography are my secondary hobbies. Contax Carl Zeiss T* lenses are my favourite. I have a particula interest on Zeiss and Beck microscopes.
Though I grow mainly other succulents, I like cacti too.
To my eyes, all plants are beautiful with their own unique features to admire and appreciate.
To me cactus and succulent growing is more than a hobby.
In my early times, it gave me comfort when I was in hard times.
By admiring and staying with plants I feel very much relieved when I was in bad mood or very tired or very sad. Worries would eventually be wiped off.
It shapes my life. It directs me towards a spiritual path.
At the beginning, I learned to identify and name plants. Then I learned to grow them to their best within the limit of my environment. I understand that very often we cannot guarantee the result. What we can do is to try our best. In this process, I saw many plants die as well as being born.
Occasionally, I could not keep or save my most beloved plants. I was very sad. I learned how to accept this and let go.
I have created many new plants from hybridization. I have also killed lots of plants. What is the meaning of life and death?
Is there anything which can permanently be possessed? This urges me to seek the answer. In parallel, this corresponds to the meaning of our living and dying. Are wealth, power and reputation important? The truth can be found in the teachings of the Buddha Sakyamuni(梵語=Shakamuni).
So I am now a Buddhist and going deeper for enlightenment.
Buddhism is not just a religion but the way to understand the entire world including living and non-living things across every time scales past, present and future.
